Mourning [A] BLKstar x Kaboom Collective LIVE PERFORMANCE MAY 31, 2024 at 7:30pm • Cleveland, Ohio Step into the future with a mesmerizing collaboration between Mourning [A] BLKstar and Kaboom Studio Orchestra in their dynamic live performance “SONG Jubileeeeeee”. As the timpani drums roll, a single spotlight illuminates a young person, a voice echoing through the hall, transporting you to the year 2054. In this future world, governed by those under 26, the absence of guns marks a shift toward unity and peace. This intimate and immersive production serves as a record, a warning, and a celebration of our collective humanity. Join us for a sensory sonic odyssey that will leave an indelible mark on your soul and cast hope and promise of a future shaped by young artists and music. Multi-generational, gender, genre non-conforming amalgam of Black culture, Mourning [A] BLKstar, is dedicated to sharing stories and songs of America’s unfolding apocalypse. Their music melds live instrumentation with hip-hop production creating sonic frequencies that illuminate the African Diaspora. Founded in Cleveland, the US-based Afrofuturist collective continues touring their music globally across Europe and the US, playing festivals from Crossing Border in Berlin with Lonnie Holley to Big Ears Festival and Le Guess Who? in Utrecht. MOURNING [A] BLKSTAR x KABOOM STUDIO ORCHESTRA A Sonic Journey from Cleveland to the Future, Where the Young Rule In an extraordinary meeting of musical forces, Kaboom Studio Orchestra and Mourning [A] BLKstar came together to create a groundbreaking live album and performance experience. Over months of collaborative workshops and rehearsals, the two groups reimagined Mourning [A] BLKstar’s powerful catalog, composed new works, and crafted an immersive soundscape where orchestral textures, experimental soul, Black liberation music, and Afrofuturism collide. The result is more than an album. It is a sonic journey, pushing boundaries of genre, process, and performance. Captured in a live audio and video recording session on May 31, 2024, at Kleist Center for Arts and Drama at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, this project invited the audience inside the creative process as it unfolded in real time. It is a celebration of collaboration, community-driven artistry, and the bold voices of Cleveland’s creative scene. The album was released on vinyl and digital platforms in summer 2025, alongside a documentary film that premiered at a special viewing party in June 2025. The documentary has also been submitted to film festivals across the globe, sharing this Cleveland-born collaboration with the world. So far the documentary it has won: May 21 Kaboom Collective is proud to announce that Kaboom Collective: Beyond the Stage has been recognized with two Telly Awards: Bronze in Student Programming and Silver in Film & Video Documentary. The Telly Awards honor excellence in video and television across all screens, and this recognition highlights the creativity, professionalism, and artistic depth of the young artists who brought this project to life .The documentary centers on the May 2024 collaboration between the Kaboom Studio Orchestra and acclaimed avant-soul group Mourning [A] BLKstar. This film is more than a behind-the-scenes look. It's a portrait of a new kind of creative process—where students and professionals work side by side to shape culture in real time. Kaboom Collective’s education model blends production, mentorship, and artistic risk-taking to give young creators real industry experience.
